UK small business marketing: a simple plan that works

Most small businesses do not need more marketing channels. They need a short list of the right ones, done consistently. Here is the plan we recommend.

Small business owners planning a marketing strategy together

Running a small business leaves little time for marketing, so the work you do has to count. The good news is that a handful of well-chosen activities, done consistently, will usually outperform a scattered approach across every platform.

Start with the basics customers check first

Before anyone gets in touch, they look you up. They check your website, your Google Business Profile and your reviews. If those three things are clear, current and trustworthy, every other bit of marketing becomes more effective.

  • Your website should explain what you do, where you work and how to contact you, on the first screen of a phone.
  • Your Google Business Profile should have the right categories, opening hours, photos and services listed.
  • Your reviews should be recent. A steady trickle of genuine reviews matters more than a large number collected years ago.

Choose one or two channels to grow

Once the foundations are in place, pick the channels that match how your customers buy:

  • Local SEO suits trades, clinics, salons and any business serving a defined area.
  • Search engine optimization suits businesses whose customers research before buying.
  • Social media suits businesses with a visual product or a community around them.
  • Google Ads suits businesses that need enquiries quickly and can measure the value of each one.

It is better to do one channel properly for six months than four channels badly for six weeks.

Set a realistic budget

There is no single right figure, but it helps to decide on a monthly amount you can sustain for at least a quarter. Marketing that stops and starts rarely builds momentum. If you are unsure, start small, measure what happens and increase spend on whatever brings in enquiries.

Measure what matters

Likes and impressions are pleasant, but enquiries and sales pay the bills. Set up simple tracking from day one:

  • Google Analytics 4 with form submissions and calls tracked as conversions
  • Google Search Console to see which searches bring people to your site
  • A note of how each new customer found you

Keep in touch with past customers

Your existing customers are often your best source of new work. A short, useful email every month or two, or a polite request for a review after each job, keeps you front of mind without much effort.
